Tooth sectioning is the first step in the process of cementum aging. Matson's standard microscope slide preparation has 2 tooth sections for each of 3 different teeth mounted on a single slide. Research sections have 6-8 sections taken at maximum intervals to maximize cementum exposure and aging accuracy.

SPECIAL HANDLING & OTHER FEES:

Black Bear reproductive histories: Effective 1 October, 2009, Matson’s will begin adding an additional charge of $1.20 for female black bears with reproductive history reconstructions. For those females with cementum evidence suggesting cub rearing, the reconstruction is an essential but time consuming part of age analysis. The charge will compensate for the additional time required.

Legal evidence: (1-3 teeth): 75.00

Legal evidence is processed within 30 days. In cases of special urgency, shorter turnaround is possible. Duplicate preparations are kept at the lab for future reference.

For larger numbers of teeth to be processed as legal evidence, inquire for price and turnaround.

FOR BLACK BEARS ONLY, Gender must be known for accurate age analysis. FOR ALL SPECIES, date of kill must be known for the period 1 February through 31 August. Matson's can record this information from tooth envelopes or other data source as a special service.

Slide labeling: Matson's no longer adds specimen identification numbers to the slide preparations. Instead, a cross reference is included inside the slide box. Slides can be labeled as a special service. See below.

IMPORT PERMIT FEE

Matson’s is required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to pay a fee of $124 for teeth of protected species or $87 for teeth of unprotected species imported to our laboratory from outside the U.S. Beginning 1 October 2009, we will charge our clients sending us teeth from outside the U.S. a single fee of $50 regardless of sample size or species protection status.

Gary Matson is available to serve as an expert witness for cementum age analyses conducted by Matson's Lab. Fees will depend upon the circumstances and requirements of each case.

TIMELY PAYMENT 4%

Discount applies if payment is by check, bank draft, or international money order within 30 days of the invoice date (40 days outside the U.S.).

UNIFORM ID NUMBER 1%

Discount applies when tooth I.D. numbers are in alpha numeric sequence (e.g. 100 teeth labeled 1-100).

It's O.K. to have a few gaps in the sequence if these are identified in documentation accompanying the teeth.

It's O.K. to have letter prefixes or suffixes if the series is still alpha numeric, and to have more than 5 characters as long as the number of characters is uniform throughout the sample.

UNIFORM SEASON 1%

Discount applies when teeth are all from a fall or winter harvest, therefore not requiring that Matson's enter dates of kill into the data record.

DISKETTE 2%

Applies when all information needed for cementum aging is supplied as a Microsoft Excel file on a diskette, CD, or as an e-mail attachment. This discount replaces No.s 2(number) and 3(season), which apply when specimen data is on a hard copy and not a diskette.
